Disclaimer: If you haven't heard about Arhkam Horror: The Card Game, you might have trouble with this post. Also, potential spoilers ahead.

Last time, I talked about playing through the Dunwich Legacy solo, especially the trouble I had playing the penultimate scenario, Where Doom Awaits.

<—— CHEAT MODE ENABLED ——>

Yeah ok, lets get this out of the way first. Since I’ve already got an asterisk on this adventure, and I’m only playing 1 investigator solo, I decided to continue my cheat of “enemies don’t auto engage with the investigator.” In the future, I should probably play multiple investigators when playing “solo”, but I tried that once before and it was just very “meh”. So Jenny Barnes and I continued our story from the previous scenario, where we jumped into a void in order to keep Yog-Sothoth from devouring our world.

Unlike last time, I managed to get a really good hand (after my mulligan) to start off with. Lone Wolf and Leo De Luca, my favorite combo of cards to have early in the game as Lone Wolf gives you an additional resource if you start in space without another investigator and Leo gives you an additional action. Considering I’m the only investigator playing….its pretty easy to make sure I’m the only investigator at a location. Therefore, combined with Jenny’s special ability, I’m able to get 3 resources every turn instead of the default 1 per turn.

…Which is really great for when I drew Jenny’s signature weapons: Jenny’s Twin 45’s. Honestly, throughout this whole campaign, I’ve probably only seen this card like twice, which is a bummer. However, since the amount of ammo you get on the card is equal to the resources you spend on the card, I easily dumped 9 resources onto the card so that I could take out whatever weird spacial monsters that came at me.

The scenario itself is really wild. You are skipping through various locations trying to find your way to the “End of the Universe”, which is where you can seal the rift to keep Yog-Sothoth in place. Then, you have to turn around and find a way out of this other worldly dimension. The design of the location cards, combined with the artwork really made me feel as if I was roaming around, literally “Lost in Time and Space”.

Having played a lot of the Arkham Horror LCG, this was the first time I actually got to experience the “end” of a campaign. I had been looking forward to this for awhile now and the scenario didn’t disappoint. It also did a great job of alluding back to choices that happened in previous scenarios, with one of the Agenda cards having you look back to see if people had been sacrificed to Yog-Sothoth and if so, an effect happens.

Luckily, I didn’t have to face Yog-Sothoth himself, maybe due to my cheating, but also due to some epic card play (so cheating kinda sorta). Towards the end of the scenario, there is a location called “Tear Through Time”, that you can only access through specific locations. One of these locations, “Steps of Y’haghari”, had been exposed earlier in the game via a mythos card. However, I had no way of getting to the Steps from the locations that were in play. The “correct” way of getting there was to keep investigating/exploring various locations and discovering new ones, or by letting more of them turn over from the mythos deck. About this time, I got really lucky and managed to draw my “Elusive” card, which allows me to disengage from a monster and move to another revealed location….like the Steps of Y’haghari. Then it was just a hop, skip, and jump over to the Tear and end the scenario.

And so my solo play through of The Dunwich Legacy came to an end. Will I ever play another Arkham Horror campaign solo again? Not for right now. I’ve got a decent group together that is playing through the next campaign, Path to Carcosa, so I’m enjoying playing through the game with other people. Plus, I’ve recently acquired Gloomhaven, and that might be my solo adventure game of choice for the next little bit (if I can ever get past the first scenario).
