You got your Magic in my D&D! You got your D&D in my Magic! This week I talk about the Guildmaster's Guide to Ravnica, one of the most recent releases from Wizards of the Coast. It shows you how to run your 5th edition Dungeons and Dragons game in the Magic realm of Ravnica.

2014-12-23 05.57.42

Merry Christmas everyone! Just a regular episode this week as I've been so booked that I have been unable to prepare any sort of Christmas special. Don't worry, I've got a couple of new things planned for the new year. In this episode, we talk about Superfight, along with a breakdown of Betrayal at House on the Hill, and we wrap a bow (HA! Christmas joke) on the ongoing D&D campaign I've been discussing.

Lots of board gaming talk this week! Between Thanksgiving and other side trips, I share plenty of gaming experiences from the past couple of weeks. I've also got the brand new 5th edition Dungeon Master's Guide to talk about, and we breakdown the social deduction game The Resistance!

Dungeons & Dragons 5th Edition: Where Do I Start?

This month, I'll be doing a lot of videos focusing on the brand new edition of Dungeons and Dragons.  This week, I break down the different starting products Wizards of the Coast has put out: the Basic Rules, the Starter Set, and the Players Handbook; and point out which group of people each product is targeted to.  Come back next week for a detailed look inside the Starter Set!

Obsessive Comics Disorder #52: "The Many Colors of Free Comic Books"

This week we wonder in what world do students get suspended when teachers show porn, find out how well Philip can pick out comic books from Free Comic Book Day, and put my Magic the Gathering knowledge to the test!  In addition, we have another classic Letter from A Douchebag Editor; which quickly goes off the rails when Philip tries to figure out a character being referred to.  All of this and much much more!

If you'd like to comment or contribute to the show, send us an email at feedback@ocdcast.com.  You can also talk to us online, I'm @ChrisTheProf on twitter and Philip is @Philip_OCD.  You can also follow us on facebook at facebook.com/obsessivecomicsdisorder.  The background music in this episode was composed by Andrew Allen and can be found on his CD's "Free Play" and "Smooth Federation" - thanks for letting us play them on the show!  Check out ocdcast.com for other great stuff, including my tabletop gaming podcast "Boards & Swords".

Most of the enchantments with constellation abilities in Journey into Nyx are enchantment creatures, but not all of them.

Strive - A spell with a strive ability lets you pump more mana into it to increase the number of targets.

Bestow, Heroic, Monstrosity are all back

God/Planeswalker Cards

Pre-Release Thoughts

Ended up picking white pack due to promo card.  2-2, with one win being a bye.  Used a new method I heard from MTGyou podcast to sort out my cards.  Originally went W/R, had lots of cheap creatures and some red instants.  Learned after first game I had no meaty creatures and white wasn't really helping me.  Switched up deck to white/green, played much better.

Boards & Swords #13: Magic The Gathering Set Preview - Born of the Gods

This episode I try something different - a new Magic: The Gathering set of cards debuted this weekend in special Pre-Release tournaments, so I sit down and talk about what's new in this set and some of my initial thoughts.  Send me some feedback on whether or not you would like more of these episodes for future set releases and what I can do to improve it!

The Cards:

165 New Cards!

Available As: Booster Packs, Fat Packs, Intro Packs

Intro Packs: Insatiable Hunger (R/G), Forged in Battle (W/R), Death's Beginning (G/B), Gifts of the Gods (U/W), Inspiration-Struck (U/B)

New Features:

Tribute - Some monsters demand respect from the denizens of Theros under the threat of terrible consequences. Tribute is a new keyword found on creatures that gives opponents an unfortunate choice: have the creature grow in size, or allow a powerful enters-the-battlefield ability to trigger.

Inspired - With creations of the divine, the epic deeds of mortals, and terrifying monsters all around, inspiration is everywhere on Theros. Inspired is an ability word that appears in italics at the beginning of abilities that trigger whenever the creature with the inspired ability becomes untapped. (An ability word has no rules meaning.)

Archetypes - The Born of the Gods set includes a cycle of creatures that grant your creatures a keyword while making sure your opponents' creatures can't have that same keyword.

Boards & Swords #12: Carcassonne, What Makes A Good Gaming Store?

photo 2 (8)
photo 2 (8)

This week, we see the return of some roleplaying game talk, chat for a bit about what makes up a good gaming store, and break down the classic game Carcassonne!

Board Games

Android: Netrunner - Still cannot win at this game! Bought the first data pack, made a pretty killer Haas-Bioroid corp deck

X-wing Miniatures - Also lost. My “tried and true” A-wing setup doesn’t work well against non-swarm builds.

Recently purchased, but can’t wait to play: Forbidden Desert, Rampage

Continuation from the news segment, but I talk about getting Chloe interested in Roleplaying games.

Featured Topic

What makes a good gaming store? I talk about some of the experiences I had on travel and 2 stores in particular that I went to up in New Jersey.

The Adventures of Chloe #7: "Commandering A Duck Dynasty Christmas"

I know its been awhile, but I managed to get Chloe back into the studio to record a pre-Christmas podcast!  We talk about a couple of the games we've been playing, what Chloe wants for Christmas, and talk about the new Magic the Gathering set coming up that she wants to see.  Then, we finish off the episode with Chloe's Top 5 TV Shows that she watches. Got a question/suggestion for a future Top 5 list for Chloe?  Let us know by emailing adventuresofchloe@gmail.com!

Boards & Swords #8: Android: Netrunner & How I Screwed Up Pandemic

photo (7)
photo (7)

This week I have LOTS of board games to talk about, I mention how my wife and I could not beat Pandemic until we read the rules again, and what happened to my D&D group in my second adventure.  Then we wrap everything up by breaking down the card game Android: Netrunner!

Boards & Swords #7: Quarriors, Commander Decks, & The First Adventure

photo 1 (4)
photo 1 (4)

This week, I talk about my first time playing the Magic: The Gathering Commander Decks and acting like a first time player in Friday Night Magic.  I also discuss what happened at the end of that first D&D session that I set up, and finish the episode breaking down the board game (dice game?) Quarriors!

Boards & Swords #5: Ascension, Theros Game Day, & Hearthstone

photo 1 (2)
photo 1 (2)

What's this?  A video game being discussed?  Yes, but not quite, as I recently got into the Hearthstone: Heroes of Warcraft closed beta.  Hearthstone is an online collectible card game based in the Warcraft universe, and you guys will definitely want to check this game out when it comes out of beta.  In addition, I discuss how the Theros Game Day went, how I finally won in X-wing, and elaborate some on the world that I set my recent D&D campaign in.  The episode finishes off with my Board Game Breakdown of Ascension by Stoneblade Entertainment.

Boards & Swords #4: King of Tokyo, Buying Cards in Magic, Starting a D&D Campaign

image (11)

Not as many new board games to talk about this week; but I highlight a game I did NOT like.  I also won my first Friday Night Magic, and I give an inside look into how I started my recent D&D campaign and a couple of the thoughts that went into that first adventure.  Then, of course we finish up with a Board Game Breakdown of Richard Garfield's King of Tokyo by Iello Games.

Obsessive Comics Disorder #40: "Nothing's Better Than Rocket Engines On A Mini Cooper"

That's right, nothing's better than watching a rocket powered Mini Cooper launch through a goal post (video below).  After I share this with Philip, we move into talking about the X-Wing miniatures game that he's been learning recently, followed by a LOT of comic talk (Larfleeze, Trinity War, Forever Evil).

Obsessive Comics Disorder #39: "Toss In Some Cuteness For A Change"

Philip's sick this week, and we will be out of town next week, so instead of going a month or so without a podcast, I pulled an audible and asked Chloe if she wanted to be on the podcast.  Hear her point of view on Baltimore Comic Con, Dave & Busters, and the Magic Prerelease that we did this past weekend.

If you like this episode, check out the podcast Chloe & I do (sometimes) called "The Adventures of Chloe".
